“Can’t seem to concentrate. Can’t seem to stay focused. Almost all parts of my work life are not interesting to me. I used to be good at this, dedicated even, but now I’m finding it almost impossible to care. It’s time for a change I guess…”

I wrote this just a few months before I left my career as a Systems Administrator for a computer services consulting company— It was a long-winded way of saying, “I am SO burnt out.” It was 15 years of being constantly on call.

My husband Martin had started a clock repair business and I decided to go work for him while I decided what to do next with my life.

At About Time, I had my hand in almost all aspects of running a small business, but what I enjoyed most was creating marketing materials like the typical business card-letterhead-envelope type, to the totally unnecessary wine label, New Years Day greeting card, and CD of songs that were “About Time” (Anybody remember ‘25 to 6 or 4’)?

Combining my love of art and design with my affection for computers felt right. I started by using Microsoft Publisher.

Martin, being the entrepreneurial type and a master at pivoting, bought a vintage auto parts company called Abingdon Spares. His goal was to develop it into an online business and he needed me to build his website. It was trickier than I thought it would be considering there were over 4,000 parts! And as before, the best part of this job was creating the marketing materials to promote the business.
